This business originally started out as “The Trading Post” in 1949. Truly, this business was built during a great time of expansion in Alaska. Currently, the building is 88 years old and is in the historic downtown waterfront of Ketchikan, Alaska. In 1993 a local family purchased the business and re-established the organization as “J&M Jewelry”. In early 2003 Alaska Trading Company was born. Harvey and Rhonda Smith took over the operation and renamed the store to Alaska Trading Company.
Recently we decided to close the storefront and spend more time with our 20 grandchildren. Our adult children and grandchildren in Utah were growing up and we missed them . Even though the older ones would stay with us in Alaska in the summer and work in our store and go salmon and halibut fishing with us, we missed the ones that were too young. Now we go to the grandkids baseball and soccer games and that is very fulfilling. We are now able to mentor all of them. As one gets older, family becomes even more important.
We are actively managing our website and still have contact with Native artists. We are expanding the website to offer our custtomers even more products.
